A Boston man searching in the dark for a better view of the Kīlauea volcano's eruption at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park fell off a cliff but survived by landing in a tree.

The assailant, who is still at large, was identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, according to three people familiar with the investigation.
