Taiwan has added China’s tech titan Huawei and chip giant Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) to its export control list, stepping up efforts to align with Washington’s crackdown on companies driving Beijing’s artificial intelligence ambitions.

Inclusion on Taiwan’s “strategic high-tech commodities” list means that Taiwanese companies must now obtain specific export permits before conducting any sales with Huawei and SMIC. This measure places these two companies in a category that also includes various organizations and firms from other nations, such as Iran and Russia.

Taiwan has hit AI companies based in China with an export ban that stops Taiwanese companies from supplying them with technology crucial to their operations.
