For example, under Nick Saban, the Alabama Crimson Tide consistently proved to be a contender for the national championship.

It's no surprise then that some of the biggest moments involving Alabama teams from Saban's 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa made their way onto ESPN's ranking of the top 25 college football plays since 2000. That includes both the joys from Alabama's victories as well as the anguish in their defeats.

If College Football Playoff indeed expands to 16 teams, it will become a more attainable destination for three-loss teams from coast to coast.

The 2026 College Football Hall of Fame class could have a few more Alabama football connections. The National Football Foundation announced 79 players and nine coaches who are in the running for the 2026 NFF College Football Hall of Fame. The announcement for the class will be made in early 2026.

Eight ESPN writers and two editors nominated the top plays since 2000. Fifty-one plays were nominated and the eight writers ranked plays from 1 to 25, with 25 points awarded for first-place votes, 24 for second place and continuing until 1 point was awarded for a play voted at No. 25.
