WASHINGTON (AP) — There were funnel cakes, stands of festival bling and American flags aplenty. There were mighty machines of war, brought out to dazzle and impress. And there was the spray of tear gas against demonstrators in Los Angeles and Atlanta, and rolling waves of anti-Trump resistance coast to coast.

U.S. Army recruitment is experiencing a turnaround, with fiscal year 2025 recruiting goals being reached four months ahead of schedule, the military branch said.

At the beginning of the parade route, a sparse and quiet crowd greeted the U.S. troops dressed in uniforms from the Revolutionary War to modern day. A few protestors holding “NO KINGS” signs aloft mingled with patriotic revelers as a light drizzle began shortly after the start of the event.
